Paul makes no distinction, READ MY POST BELOW ABOUT IT. Priscilla and Aquila have no impact on this discussion because it has nothing to do with whether women can be leaders IN the church. As you said this was not even a church setting…Read 1 Tim 3:2-5, one of the necessary implied qualifications to be a bishop, or a leader in the church, is to be a man…Paul’s basis – that man was made first and woman was made as a helper, women come under men’s leadership but youve yet to comment on this…

NONONONO… you miss the point; Apollos wasn’t in the pulpit some where preaching in a local church bldg. Prisilla didn’t just go with her husband and sit quietly by while Aquila spoke! They took him aside both of them cuz it was the proper conduct for believers to do! I make a case for Paul’s appreciatin for women teachers. I know Plenary inspiration… Paul makes the distinction NOT me. We’ll speak on this more later…

Look, it is clear as day that 1 Tim. 2:12 forbids women to be teachers. If it is solely a specific situation, then tell me what situation it is because the context makes it clear that these are guidelines for the church. Look at 1 Tim. 3:2-5 for the requirements of a bishop or “an overseer;” a leader in the church. It is all male qualifications which means no women. Sorry, but if you’re a woman Adam was made first, thus women are to be submissive to men in the church and home.

Acts 18:24 speaks of Apollos who was teaching boldly though he knew only the baptism of John. In v26, Priscilla and Aquila take him “aside” and proclaimed the way of God more accurately to him. This was not in a corporate time of worship with the body, so it is very biblical for this couple to confront Apollos and really has no impact on this discussion.

Duh Jesus is God, but well on the earth Jesus did not speak of this. That is why Paul is saying look I am adding this to the teachings of Christ and it is to be taken as the words of Christ. See my post below on 1 Cor. 7, you misunderstand it. You have a major theological error in thinking that Paul’s opinion could somehow get mixed in with God’s inspired Word – that just didn’t happen. It’s called Plenary inspiration which means ALL GOD, no Paul or any other writer.

Jesus IS god, his teachings- eternal life! Paul is Apostle of Christ. The apostolic office is authoritative, i see difference with Paul’s apostolic statements & his personal opinions ex: 1 Cor 7. I am saying 2tim 2:12 mks no sense w/o the overall context of the entire letter: faithful doctrine & conduct. I see Paul clearly values women teachers Act 18:24-28; Deborah: Philip’s daughters. We may not have that big of a disagreement but we do have different perspectives w/ the application today.

Yes we do not expect Paul to visit us today. However the principle found in 2 Timothy 2:12 is that women are not to be teachers over men or have authority over them in the church. That is the principle. Just as Jesus told his disciples the great commission, which the principle is still applicable to us today even though he did not say it directly to us, the principle of what Paul is saying to Timothy is applicable today and it is called sin to disobey that.

Yes 1 tim deals w/church polety, sound doctrine & false teachers. Ur exegesis of the text is good. we R missing ea other on the context, the church that Timothy leads. The teaching is general but contextually specific. U can’t interpret passage w/o 1st seeing the primary context then mk application 4 today. Paul tells Tim in 2 Tim 3, he hopes 2 visit- surely we don’t expect Paul plans 2 visit us. We must agree that the teaching was for Tim first b4 is can then apply to anyone else. (1st of 2)

Secondly, when Paul says in 1 Cor. 7:12 “I not the Lord say…” This is not a denial of God given inspiration. He is saying the Lord has not previously spoken on this and God had not given any revelation of the matter of divorcing an unsaved spouse. This is in fact a very authoritative statement saying that I am speaking for God that I am adding revelation to God by speaking for Him and Paul expects his audience to submit to it. Paul knew he was speaking for God.

That has absolutely nothing to do with this discussion just as it would have nothing to do with a discussion about the husband being the head of a house. These roles were ordained by God at the creation of man and woman.

So we know this is not some Pauline bias, this is not cultural, this is not something for only that church. This is called hermeneutics: the proper interpretation of the verse that leads to a proper application today which is that women are not to be teach or have authority over man. If you believe it is only for a specific situation at that specific church, tell me what specifically is he talking about? You see any names, any actions, anything like that in this verse? Nope.

confused the biblical role of women and some of them probably were women. Paul rebukes this saying “I permit not a woman to teach.” That is what silence refers to and “submission” refers to not ruling. Why are women supposed to be in submission and silent in the church over men? v13 “For Adam was formed first, then Eve.” The principle present in here is that women are subordinate to men because man was formed first. This is God’s design. Women’s place was ordained in the order of creation.

No. First let’s clear up this mess. 1 Tim. 2:12 – A specific situation or applicable to us today? Well, you mentioned Acts 20. Paul’s primary concern was false teachers among the church (v29) and he was warning the leadership. If you look at 1 tim. 1:20, you see Paul already dealt with some false leadership in Ephesus himself. Yes, in the Ephesian church women were wanting to take the role of a teacher over men. 3 C’s-yes but you’ve not rightly dividing the passage. The context is specific & dealing with the perilous times 2 come 2 this fledgling church… how many women U know at your church can learn from their men? Most women I know R better educated & have better paying jobs. 3 C’s… you’ve missed it by adding a modern presuposition N2 historic context. Paul does see his teaching amoung the whole council of God (Act 20) but he makes a disctinction in 2Tim3 from the Holy Scriptures.

To correctly divide the word of truth we must know the context and find the principle. The principle will then apply to our lives. The principle in 1 tim 2:12 is clearly not just talking about the specific situation but the roles of a woman in the church. Paul is giving timothy, pastor of the Ephesus church (1:3), instruction on these roles. Adam was made first, therefore men have authority of women in the church and that is as true today as it ever was. Context, context, context.

2 Tim. 3:16 says all Scripture is God breathed meaning that everything written in this book is from God, not Paul or any other authors. 1 Tim. 2:8 also says that men “pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands” though this does not mean that they must always lift their hands to pray. This verses emphasizes that men need to be the leaders in the church meeting for corporate worship and that they are to live a righteous life (holy hands). The principle of this is men are leaders in church.

Good topic: 1 Tim 2:12 Paul is speaking about a specific issue in THAT church; his perspective for THAT specific context. Note he doesn’t say “God says”, he says “i say”. Eph 5:21 tell us 2 submit 2 one another. We must rightly divide the word of truth or we get stuck on minor things missing the mark of God. 1 Tim 2: 8 says men 2 pray everywhere lifting up holy hands, so I guess women can’t pray & men have 2 pray with their hands up every where we go; we know better than that. Context is king!

God is not an arbitrary thing that we will not define thinking that that limits Him. The Bible is God telling us who He is, what He wants to do, and His principles to live by. God established the role of women to be submissive to men (1 Tim 2:13). This clearly does not mean that God will not use women for His glory, but that women have different roles. The church is a body with many members, the smallest part being as important as the paster/teacher.

Firsty, the MSG is not a translation, it is a complete and total paraphrase and not very good at all. Secondly, it is not about agreeing or disagreeing with someone, it is a matter of Biblical instruction. Does the Bible teach that women should not be pastors? yes it does, they are not to have authority over men in the church (1 Tim 2:12). Paul probably did have a specific situation in mind, however, the same applies today. Also see 1 Tim 3:2. A bishop is a leader in the church.

Well thats different in multiple translations. THE MSG just says “they should study to be quiet and obedient along with everyone else”
The keyword being ‘everyone.’
Could Paul just be talking about something specific and not the entire human race?
Also in your version, it says that women should not teach in general. So that would include sunday school? Correct?

Assuming we agree that the Bible is the ultimate authority of a Christian it should not matter what feel, but what the Bible says. 2 Tim. 2:12 “And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence.” And why is this? v13 “For Adam was formed first, then Eve.” Biblically, women cannot be pastors. They can teach children and other women, but they are not to have authority or teach over men.
